NERDCORE FOR LIFE documentary will be out on DVD this month

Negin Farsad's great documentary "Nerdcore Rising" about the Godfather of Nerdcore Rap, MC Frontalot, brought worldwide attention to this not-so-new-but-much-neglected subgenre of rap.
Frontalot is the star of the scene (and currently working on his new album).

But there's another great documentary by filmmaker Dan Lamoureux. "Nerdcore for life" has been circling around for a while already (the trailer dates back to '06) but NOW, in January 2010, it will finally be released on DVD.

Here's the trailer:

My favorite quote: "In the Twenties, we had women slaves(?), in the Sixties it was Civil Rights, in the Ninties Gay Pride. In the new millennium, bitches better fear the nerd revolution!" Lol.

Charles Hamilton – Geeky hipster, or hip Geek?

Much has been said about Charles Hamilton in the past year. Discussions heated up, especially in the internet, the place that made him famous in the first place.

Some say Charles Hamilton is a Hipster rapper. Other's say he's a nerd, a geeky guy who got punched by a girl.

There's this video in which he explains his (Sega) philosophy.
http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/11/25/rap-mixtape-about-being-sonic-the-hedgehog/ (sorry I didn't find a way to embed this.)

It's hard to be different and it takes a lot of courage to dare to be, and think, different than the average- That's for sure.

I think there's a thin line between a geek and a hipster. Sometimes that transformation happens once the horrors and excitements of puberty and/or high school/college with its peer pressure and all have ended.

I mean, look at Pharrell! A nerd trapped in a hipster body. By the way, he also seems to be hooked on those video games.

Lupe Fiasco. Another Nerd-turned-Hipster. By choice or not, doesn't matter. In a 2006 interview with VIBE magazine, he declared himself a nerd:

"I'm a regular guy, but I'm nerdy, too. In high school I was a nerd, and I haven't changed." Yet, as he flips through a magazine in the lobby of the ultra-chic Le Meridian Hotel in Beverly Hills, it's hard not to notice his colorful BAPE sneakers, Cartier frames surrounding his eyes, and all of the expensive pieces of jewelry he sports nonchalantly. The ideal depiction of a "nerd" seems light-years away from who Lupe Fiasco is today. The young rapper insists, however, that he is NOT the typical depiction of a nerd; not for how he dresses, but for how he uses his mind and abilities. "It wasn't even that I studied a lot in school," Lupe says before his show at the famed House of Blues in Hollywood. "I collected comic books and I knew massive amounts of information about the most trivial subjects and would 'wow' my peers. I was on the Knowledge Bowl Decathlon Team!"

Hm, and what do we make of kids like the New Boyz, rapping about staying "geeked up" and jerk dancin'?

We'll keep watching how this Hipster vs. Geek thing develops! :-)

So...this is how it goes:

Happy New Year, Chinese Year of the Tiger. Whatever that means, I'm sure it's a good sign.

NERD Fest. Berlin will go into its second round around fall '10, so be patient.

Until then, we will bring you all kinds of stuff we consider nerd-, err, noteworthy.
Everything around Nerds and nerdy folks in music, film, gaming, illustration and aaall the other areas of pop culture where we can be found.
Or simply thoughts, or just questions (like for example: how can we get in touch with Nerds from all around the globe? Japan, Argentina - ok, already found someone in Argentina - and so on.)

We're looking forward to your regular visits and lots of nerdy exchanges!!!

about NERD Fest. Berlin

Hello and welcome to the NERD Fest. Berlin Blog!

This is the first blog entry so allow me to introduce myself briefly:

Hi, I’m Alia and I am the initiator, organizer, „mastermind“ (muhahahahaa) – whatever you wanna call it – of NERD Fest. Berlin.

The idea for an event thatfocuses on Nerds and all aspects of (pop) culture, especially music, film, blogging & internet, art and design had been on my mind for quite some time - Since early 2007 to be exact. NERD Fest. Berlin is an homage to all „real“ Nerds, to all experts in their fields of interest who might be a little different from the rest.

NERD Fest. Berlin is not an event or a party to make fun of Nerds, it also isn’t a convention-type of gathering where only real Nerds come together. Rather, my intention, my vision, is to bring together Nerds, Hipsters (or, like journalist and author Benjamin Nugent writes in his book American Nerd. The story of my people: „fake Nerds“) Nerd lovers and all people who are curious and want to find out what this is all about.

The first issue of NERD Fest. Berlin has participants, DJ’s, and speakers mainly from Berlin, Germany. There is going to be a focus on music and Nerds. I hope that in the future the Fest. will establish itself and grow. We’ll see.

I am looking forward to all of you!

Come, come out and let’s celebrate the Realness of the Nerd!

Geek, Freak, NERD! Nerds rule! Nerds are cool. Nerd Fest. Berlin is a homage to the Real Nerd and a fest for all „fake“ Nerds and Nerd Lovers. It took place for the first time on December 12, 2009 in Berlin, Germany. It was an interdisciplinary evening with a film screening, a Nerd Discussion and of course a wild party. Hopefully Nerd Fest. Berlin is going to establish itself and will grow each year. One whole evening and night we will celebrate the „realness“ of the Nerd. Come join us!
